Blue sky, orange dunes, white earth — and between them, the dark shapes of trees that have been dead for many centuries. The camel thorn trees of Deadvlei once thrived here, fed by a river that the shifting dunes eventually buried. The water disappeared. The trees died. But in this desert, where the air holds almost no moisture, nothing decays.

So they remain — blackened trunks and bare branches rising from the cracked clay, still reaching upward, still holding their ground against a dune that towers above them. The scale is hard to grasp. The stillness is harder. These are the ghosts of Sossusvlei — not haunting this place so much as belonging to it, rooted in death the same way they were once rooted in life.
